The meeting, open to anyone, will be on 12 September 2011 in the Library Meeting Room (downstairs) at 7:30 pm.

Join the Fun This Friday: Family Night at MAPL

The Matawan Aberdeen Public Library's Summer Reading Program has reached the halfway mark, so that could only mean it's time for Family Night Fun! This Friday July 15th from 6:30 pm to 8 pm, the library invites families to come out for a caricature artist drawing portraits. There will also be tie-dyeing activities. And, most importantly, the Friends will be providing ice cream treats.

So come to the library for Family Night this Friday!

The following are summary notes from the Minutes of the June 6 meeting of the Friends.

Important Dates -

Monday, June 13th - 7 PM: Meet at library to stuff Summer Reading Bags with applications downstairs (instead of attending the Summer Reading Program kickoff)

Tuesday, June 21st - 5:30 PM: Teen Place Reception. Set up at 5:30, reception starts at 6:30

Meeting Notes -

Strathmore School Tricks Tray - $100 donation from the friends
Book Donations - Sign to be put up stating the library is no longer taking donations. Donations will begin again in August, in preparation of the October Book Sale
Teen Place Reception -

Bar stools, Cafe Tables & Adult furniture will be in place for the reception.
Signage for the Friends will be provided in a lucite frame in the shelving end cap. The sign will identify the Teen Place as a gift from the Friends of the Matawan / Aberdeen Library, with the Friends logo displayed
Invitations will be sent by the Library
Friends will provide the Press announcement, plates, napkins, and all refreshments
Attendees: Friends, board, staff, middle and high school librarians, teen volunteers, press, mayors, area teen librarians, public.

July & August meetings have been cancelled
September meeting will focus on IRS submission for moving to a 501(c)(3) status, Committee breakdowns per the new bylaws and the Book Sale planned for October

Greetings Friends!

Congratulations on a job well done - another successful book sale!

Anne's preliminary income from the book sale is $1188.00 (the fall sale brought in $1110).

Thank you Laurie Creed for overseeing the sale and thank you to all the members who volunteered your time to make this such a success.

I hope to see you all at our next meeting on June 6 at 7:30pm in the library meeting room. We will be discussing/planning the Teen Center reception that will be held on the day of the Summer Reading Program kickoff, June 18.

Book Sale Ready for May 14!

A quick trip to the library this evening shows that the book sale, scheduled for Saturday morning is on.

The book sale starts at 9 am and goes to 1 pm, and weather permitting will be outdoors. The indoor meeting room of the library will also be used to provide refreshments.

In case of rain, the sale will be held in the meeting room.

Friends of the Library run sales and hold programs to support the Matawan Aberdeen Public Library, as well as the outreach and literacy needs of the community.

How will YOU tell your librarian you appreciate all their hard work?

Obviously the best ways are time honored: a "thank you" and respect and good manners at all times. For those who want to go that little bit extra, and are wracking their brains for ideas, the ALA has published a list of celebration / appreciation activities you might partake of, either as a solo project or with the support of your Library Director, or the Friends of the Library.

National Library Worker's Day was initiated in 2003 and is celebrated each year in April. NLWD is celebrated in 2011 on April 12th. Future dates are: April 10, 2012 and April 16, 2013.

Here are just some of the ways in which you can help to ensure that your library remains free to the many thousands of people who visit in person or via the web each year. I gleaned them from a list provided from California Friends and Foundations of California Libraries.

Contribute - donate your time, talents and expertise to your library
Volunteer - present a program, join the Friends, volunteer to re-shelve books
Promote - attend government meetings to urge municipalities and your state to invest in libraries

Membership campaign

It was suggested we get applications out to the public either by putting them in the books for sale, having the circulation staff hand them out to patrons, and/or handing them out at our next book sale. We decided to create a half-sheet application and ask the circulation staff to hand them to patrons and hand them out at the next book sale. Diane Jones will create the half-sheet application.

We will wait to see what the library uses and perhaps have larger signs created that match. We will use the small signs in frames for now.

Book donations, guidelines, begin date January 10

Spring Book Sale – May 14

We need to decide on a Book Sale Chair by March (Laurie Creed has since volunteered)

Meeting with Librarian, Kimberly Paone

We may use the desk in the basement for book sorting.
The library staff will help take book donations to the basement.
One of the staff noticed that there was a DVD for sale in a Blockbuster case. This was returned to the store it came from. The Friends should be alerted to avoid accepting anything that is "donated" with a store's packaging. The Friends will be alert for items on shelving as we sort and organize.

Requests from library

Food for staff training in March, breakfast and lunch - We will pay for food (breakfast and lunch at $400) during a staff training once a year.

Taking Steps for Literacy sponsors literacy programs of NJ, a May 1 Walk at Middlesex County College - We can sponsor the walkers, walk ourselves, perhaps purchase team t-shirts. Friends will request an estimate on t-shirts and learn the process on sponsoring the group.

Teen center – The Librarian is planning to set aside a portion of the library specifically for teens. A full request will be forthcoming in February or March.

Anahid Gregg volunteered to be the Friends Secretary.

Action Items - discuss with Kimberly:
• Ask circulation staff to hand out half-sheet applications to patrons.
• Estimate for t-shirts, sponsorship for Walk.

Friends Book Sale Set for October 2, 2010

The Friends of the Library will be holding our Fall book sale, on October 2nd from 9 am - 1 pm.

Items available for sale include books for children, teens, and adults, books on CD, and movies.

Refreshments will be provided.

Through member donations and book sales, the Friends have been able to support the Library in many ways, such as the summer reading program, youth services, and provide additional library services.

New Director to Meet Public

The Library Board is moving up its regular meeting time on September 1, 2010 to 7 pm, in order to host a small reception to meet the new director. The public is invited to attend.

The Library Trustees have formally announced the appointment of Kimberly Paone as the new library director, effective September 7, 2010.

Membership Campaign

We will be conducting a campaign to increase membership in the Fall 2010. Action: At her September meeting with the new director, Diane Jones will present a script for use by staff to encourage MAPL Friends membership.

Media Sales Shelf

The MAPL Friends need a new shelf to display DVDs we have for sale. Action: We will wait to discuss the possibilities with the new director

Ellison Templates

Youth Services requests an annual budget line for Ellison Templates. Action: While we are not funding a regular budget item, we will consider specific requests for items through the director.

Digitization Project

The Library is requesting funding towards digitization of the Independent newspaper. Action: The MAPL Friends did not approve the request at this time. We will wait to see what additional funding the library obtains from other area libraries, digitization grants, and other funding.

MAPL Friends Finances

A separate article will discuss projects / library requests we have funded.

Blog

MAPL Friends should have a blog. Action: Diana Noble will set up a blog for the Friends and update it as the need arises.

Forms

MAPL Friends need an assortment of standardized forms. Action: The following are being prepared.

1. Thank yous for membership – Michele Meany
2. Receipts for book donations – Diane Jones
3. Book plates – Diane Jones

Logo

MAPL Friends need a logo. The group discussed whether to use the new library logo or design our own. Action: The Friends decided to have Suzan Globus design a separate logo for us. This logo will include aspects of the library logo.

Upcoming Events:

Booth at Aberdeen Day (September 25) - The Library staff are not participating this year, so the MAPL Friends will not participate either.

Fall Book Sale – Originally scheduled for September 18th, but event conflicts with Yom Kippur. A tentative new date is October 2, 2010. The sale would be part of Matawan Day, which will involve all of downtown Matawan. A planning meeting will be held August 23 at 7pm at Starbucks. All interested parties are invited to attend. Members are asked to bring boxes to help sort and organize the donated books.

Future Meetings of MAPL Friends are scheduled for September 13, October 4, November 1, and December 6, 2010. All meetings are in the basement of the library at 7:30 pm.

Friends of the Library have recently reorganized and are anxious to provide more support for Library staff and programs. The Friends will need more members in order to accomplish this. In the near future we will be posting notices of meetings, articles on how to join the friends, and meeting agendas and minutes.
